Should I repair or replace my furnace?
Two things settle it: how old the furnace is, and whether the failure is a part or the heat exchanger. A twelve-year-old furnace with a bad ignitor is a repair. A twenty-year-old furnace with a cracked heat exchanger is a replacement, because that specific part is not safely repairable. What are the signs a furnace is failing?
Cold or lukewarm air at the vents, short cycling, a yellow or flickering burner flame, burning or musty smells, banging and scraping sounds, and heating bills that climb without a colder winter behind them. How long does a gas furnace last?
Fifteen to twenty years is the normal working life of a gas furnace, and annual servicing tends to push it toward the top of that range. Past twenty, the question stops being whether it will fail and becomes whether it fails in January.

What does AFUE mean on a furnace?
AFUE stands for Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency, and it is the share of the gas a furnace turns into usable heat over a year. A 96 AFUE furnace puts 96% of its fuel into the house and sends the rest out the flue. Sizing and efficiency tiers are covered on our furnace installation page.
How often should a furnace be serviced?
Once a year, in fall, before the heating season starts. The visit is as much a safety check as a performance one: heat exchanger, venting, gas pressure and carbon monoxide all get looked at. The X-Plan maintenance membership covers that visit plus a cooling visit, scheduled automatically.
Do you work on electric furnaces and air handlers?
Yes, on any brand. Electric furnaces, air handlers and the heat pump and dual-fuel systems that pair with them are all covered, whoever installed the equipment.
