What counts as a plumbing emergency?
Water you cannot shut off, sewage coming up indoors, a burst or frozen pipe, no water to the house, a water heater dumping onto the floor, or a gas smell near an appliance. Anything on that list is worth a 2 a.m. call. Most other plumbing can wait until morning without costing you more.
If it is on the left-hand list, call now, whatever the hour. If it is on the right, morning is fine and it will not cost you more.

Where is my water shut-off valve?
In most Dayton and Cincinnati homes with a basement, the main shut-off is on the interior wall facing the street, within a few feet of where the pipe comes through the foundation, usually near the meter. Slab homes often have it in a utility closet or the garage. Turn it clockwise until it stops.

What should I do while I wait for a plumber?
Shut the nearest valve, or the main if you cannot find it. Move anything you care about off the floor. Stop running water into the affected drains, including appliances on a timer. Photograph the damage before you clean it up, because your insurer will ask.

Frozen and burst supply lines dominate December through February in both metros, usually in an unheated crawl space, an exterior wall, or a garage line nobody thought about. The break itself often happens on the thaw, not the freeze, which is why the flood starts the afternoon it warms up.
