Why twice a year rather than once?
Because heating and cooling are two different machines sharing a cabinet, and they fail at opposite ends of the year. A spring visit is about the condenser, the refrigerant charge and the condensate drain before the first heat wave. An autumn visit is about combustion, the heat exchanger and the safeties before the first hard freeze. Doing one visit in between gets you half of each at the wrong time of year. If you only ever do one, make it autumn: a no-cool night is uncomfortable and a no-heat night can freeze pipes.
We have two systems. Do both need visits?
Yes, and they usually need them at different times for different reasons. In most two-system houses one serves upstairs and one down, and the upstairs unit works considerably harder in summer while the downstairs one carries more of the winter. They also tend to be different ages, because they rarely fail together. Treat them as two pieces of equipment with two sets of readings rather than one appointment, because the older one is where the next decision is going to come from.
What does priority scheduling actually mean?
It means you go ahead of non-members on the day everyone calls at once, which is the only day it matters. On an ordinary Tuesday in April, everybody gets same-day service and the distinction is invisible. On the first 95-degree afternoon of the summer, or the morning after the first hard freeze, the board fills before lunch. That is what the queue position is for. It is worth understanding that plainly rather than discovering it either way in July.
Does maintenance actually make equipment last longer?
It makes early failure less likely, which is not quite the same claim and is the honest version. Most of what shortens a system's life is airflow: a starved return makes a furnace run hot and an air conditioner run cold, and both stress the parts that cost the most to replace. Maintenance catches the dirty coil, the failing capacitor and the sagging blower wheel while they are still small. What it cannot do is make a twenty-year-old system into a new one, and anyone promising that is selling something else.
