The system is old. Is maintenance throwing good money after bad?
Not if it is buying you information. On a system past fifteen years, the purpose of a visit shifts: less about extending life and more about knowing where you stand before winter, so a replacement is a decision you make in September rather than one made for you in January. Ask directly for an assessment of how much life is realistically left. A straight answer to that is worth more than the tune-up itself.
Should I cover the outdoor unit for winter?
Generally no. A heat pump must not be covered at all, because it runs all winter. An air conditioner does not need one either: the unit is built to sit outside, and a full wrap traps moisture against the metal and gives mice somewhere dry to nest in the wiring. If you want to keep leaves out of the top, a piece of plywood weighted on the fan grille does that without sealing the cabinet. Take it off before the first cooling call in spring.
When should I book, to avoid the rush?
Late winter for the cooling visit and late summer for the heating one, which feels a season early and is exactly the point. Book in April and you are competing with everyone whose air conditioner just failed. Book in February and you get the appointment window you actually want. It also means a problem found in the tune-up gets fixed with time in hand, rather than becoming a decision made in a hot house with a technician standing there.
It is brand new. Does it need maintenance already?
Yes, and for two reasons that have nothing to do with the equipment being worn. The first is the warranty, which usually requires it from year one. The second is that a new system's first year is when installation issues surface: a charge that was slightly off, a duct connection that has worked loose, a condensate line pitched wrong. Those are all cheap to correct early and expensive to discover after they have been quietly stressing the system for three summers.
