Is a higher MERV filter always better?
No, and this is the most common way people make things worse while trying to help. A denser filter catches more, and it also restricts more air, and a system designed around a one-inch filter can be starved by a high-MERV one dropped into the same slot. Starved airflow means a furnace running hot and an air conditioner freezing its coil. If you want serious filtration, the answer is a thicker media cabinet with far more surface area, not a denser filter in the existing gap.
What actually affects the air in a house?
Four things, roughly in order: moisture, ventilation, filtration and source control. Humidity that sits too high grows things and too low irritates everything. Ventilation decides whether what you generate indoors gets diluted or accumulates. Filtration catches particles, and only particles. Source control means the cooking, the cleaning products, the attached garage and the pets that put things into the air in the first place. Most air quality money gets spent on the third one when the answer was one of the other three.
The house feels damp even with the AC running.
Cooling removes moisture only while the coil is cold and air is moving across it. An oversized system satisfies the thermostat in short bursts and never runs long enough to dehumidify, which is how a house ends up cool and clammy. Above about 60% relative humidity you get the conditions for dust mites and mold regardless of how clean the house is. The fix is sometimes a dehumidifier and is often correcting why the system short cycles, so measure the humidity before buying equipment for it.
What is the difference between CO and CO2 in a house?
Carbon monoxide is the dangerous one and comes from incomplete combustion: furnaces, water heaters, fireplaces, a car in an attached garage. It has no smell and it needs alarms. Carbon dioxide is what people exhale, and while it is not toxic at household levels, a room where it climbs is a room that is not being ventilated, so it is a useful proxy for stale air. Alarms are for the first. The second is a ventilation question rather than a safety one.
