Our house is new. Why does the air feel worse?
Because it is tight and because it is new, and those are two separate effects. A well-sealed shell holds indoor moisture and cooking byproducts instead of leaking them away, so anything generated indoors stays longer. New materials also off-gas for months: flooring, cabinets, paint, adhesives and furniture. Ventilation is the answer to both, and in a new house that usually means using the mechanical ventilation that is already installed rather than adding equipment.
Is a higher MERV filter always better?
No, and this is the most common way people make things worse while trying to help. A denser filter catches more, and it also restricts more air, and a system designed around a one-inch filter can be starved by a high-MERV one dropped into the same slot. Starved airflow means a furnace running hot and an air conditioner freezing its coil. If you want serious filtration, the answer is a thicker media cabinet with far more surface area, not a denser filter in the existing gap.
The basement smells musty and it is spreading upstairs.
Basements run cooler, so humid summer air condenses down there, and anything the air handler pulls in gets distributed to the whole house. Measure the relative humidity before doing anything else. Above about 60% the answer is dehumidification and finding where the water is coming from, not air freshening. Check the obvious sources first: grading and downspouts outside, an uninsulated cold-water line sweating, and a condensate drain that is discharging where it should not.
The house feels damp even with the AC running.
Cooling removes moisture only while the coil is cold and air is moving across it. An oversized system satisfies the thermostat in short bursts and never runs long enough to dehumidify, which is how a house ends up cool and clammy. Above about 60% relative humidity you get the conditions for dust mites and mold regardless of how clean the house is. The fix is sometimes a dehumidifier and is often correcting why the system short cycles, so measure the humidity before buying equipment for it.
